sick manWhether you plan on getting your flu shot this year, you still need to take necessary steps to prevent getting sick or lessen your symptoms.  Going the extra mile to avoid getting the flu can be a hassle, but it will be worth it when you’re not missing days of work, bedridden.

The best way to prevent getting sick in the first place is to understand how you may be putting yourself at risk for catching a cold or the flu.  Here are a few ways you might be putting yourself in the flu’s way.

Not Washing Your Hands

While hand sanitizers are effective for moments when a sink is not available, they do not replace old-fashioned hand-washing.  Aim for washing your hands for at least 20 seconds before and after eating, after handling garbage, encounters with colleagues, going to the gym, riding public transportation, and other places you may touch throughout the day.

Shaking Hands

From meeting new business partners to making new friends, you may greet people with a handshake, but during cold and flu season, you might want to avoid doing this.  Shaking hands during a meeting can seem innocent, and impolite if declined, but close contact with infected individuals is one of the easiest ways to pick up a virus. If you plan on shaking hands to avoid being rude, be sure to keep hand sanitizer handy, or wash your hands after the encounter.

Going to the Gym

While working out makes you feel and look good, touching all the germ-laden equipment throughout your workout is a sure way of picking up infections and viruses, from the treadmill to the benches in the locker room, and even your gym bag.  Make sure you’re using your gym’s sanitizing wipes to cleanse equipment before and after use, and if you can, bring your own towel to create a barrier from direct skin contact to the equipment.

Not Getting Proper Rest

Ever notice that when you’re overworking your body and not getting enough sleep, you suddenly get sick?  This is your body telling you to slow down and take it easy. The average adult needs at least 6-8 hours of rest for a productive work day, so be sure to catch all the ZZZs you can.

Now that cold/flu season is almost here, you’re probably wondering about different tactics to avoid getting sick.   Here are a few ways you can avoid catching a cold, or decreasing your likelihood of having severe flu symptoms.

  • Get your Flu ShotGetting your flu shot is not only a preventative measure to avoid getting the flu, but you can even lessen your cold symptoms by getting vaccinated.
  • Practice Frequent Hand Washing – Running water and soap will dilute any germs and viruses and send them straight down the drain.
  • Limit Contact with Sick People – Keeping your distance from people with symptoms such as coughing and sneezing will reduce your chances of getting sick from others.
  • Getting Proper Rest – With Daylight Savings coming within the next few weeks, this is another reason to catch up on more sleep, so take advantage of the longer nights to rest up, as your body needs proper rest to operate functionally.
