The summer months bring bouts of fun outdoor activities from swimming, bike riding, hiking, and even a trip to an amusement park!  But planning on spending time out in the hot summer sun might lead to a case of sunburn if you neglected to apply sunscreen before heading out of the house.

To help heal and soothe stinging skin, it’s important to begin treating your sunburn as soon as you notice it.  Here are a few ways you can relieve the discomfort, so you can get back to enjoying the warm weather!

  1. Take frequent cool baths or showers – Immediately after getting out of the shower, apply a moisturizer to help trap water on your skin and ease the dryness that comes along with a sunburn.
  2. Use a moisturizer that contains aloe vera – Aloe is known as a miracle product that eases the pain and helps the appearance of a sunburn.
  3. Take care of the sunburned skin – Not only should you be actively applying a moisturizer to help with the dryness, you should also wear protective clothing when outdoors to prevent exposed skin from sunburn.
  4. If your skin peels or blisters, allow it time to heal – Avoid picking at or popping your skin, as a blisters form to help your skin from infections.
  5. Drink more water – When you get sunburned, your skin is dehydrated.  A sunburn draws fluid to the skin’s surface and away from the rest of your body, so drink up!
