woman sick at workIf you’re reading this, more than likely you have contracted a cold at some point every winter season.  If you skip your annual flu shot, you’re increasing your chances of catching that, too.  Aside from getting your annual flu shot and practicing good hygiene, there are a few ways you can cut your risk of getting sick this cold and flu season.  Follow these tips to make this flu season your healthiest one yet!

Crack Open a Window

Spending all day in a stuffy room with coworkers who are under the weather will increase your likelihood of picking up whatever they have.  Even if it’s a little chilly outside, letting in some fresh air keeps airborne viral particles on the move, making it harder to pick up.

You can also go for a walk outside!  A little midday exercise can boost your mood and your immune system, which can help you from getting sick.

Turn Away from Sneezers

You never want to be deemed as rude, but moving out of harm’s way from someone with a case of the sneezes and sniffles is crucial.  Germs carried in sneeze particles can travel up to 20 feet, so be sure to politely excuse yourself, and steer clear of their direction.

Quit Touching Your Face

You might as well be licking the bathroom door (yuck!).  By avoiding touching your face, you’re cutting your odds of getting sick.  Touching you nose, eyes and mouth are common areas through which germs enter the body, so stop touching your face!

Get Regular Sleep

Ever notice that when you’re really tired that you somehow end up sick?   That’s your body telling you to slow down and get some shut-eye. Take advantage of fall and winter’s longer nights and get more sleep!  

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Indulging in water and other fluids helps to thin out the mucus that your body makes when you’re sick.  Some good choices include juices filled with vitamins and antioxidants like orange juice and cranberry juice, or hot liquids that will ease your sore throat like tea or chicken soup.

Skip Your Workout

If you’re battling a bad cold of the flu, it’s best to skip your workout until you’re feeling like your normal self.  Your body needs the energy to fight off your virus, and being in a germ-infested gym will not only keep you sick, but might make the other gym-goers sick, too.

Call in Sick

It may be tempting to be a trooper, but your coworkers don’t want to hear or see you coughing and sneezing all over the office.  Do your coworkers and yourself a favor and call in sick.
